Information from the South African Insurance Association (SAIA)
Complaints have been received from brokers and insured’s (policyholders) who had experienced problems when trying to report thefts and hijackings to the SAPS and being sent from pillar to post by staff at the various police stations. The matter was taken up with Business Against Crime South Africa (BACSA) who has agreed to obtain an official protocol document (National Instruction) from the SAPS which will be distributed to brokers and insurance policyholders in due course. BACSA is also investigating the possibility of making a business portal number available where these complaints can be centralised for referral to a higher authority within the SAPS. It was noted that the SAPS are not at liberty to refuse to open a docket.
